PR: Ready for a new Grieg Competition

The Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen is organising the 14th International Edvard Grieg Piano Competition in Bergen from 11 to 18 October this year.

On Saturday 11 October 2014, 30 talented pianists from 19 different countries will converge in hopeful anticipation on Grieg’s home, Troldhaugen, in Bergen. In the course of one week they will compete for honour and glory – and a first prize consisting of 30 000 euro. It is the second time the competition will be arranged in Bergen.

Edvard Grieg (1843 – 1907) is undoubtedly Norway’s greatest composer. His home, Villa Troldhaugen, is one of the country’s most famous attractions. The initial rounds of the competition will take place in the museum’s uniquely designed chamber music hall, Troldsalen, from 12 to 16 October.

In the final round of the competition, which will take place in Grieghallen on Saturday 18 October, the finalists will give solo performances accompanied by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the world’s oldest symphony orchestras, and which Grieg also used to conduct.

The jury consists of the renowned pianists:
Leif Ove Andsnes (Norway), Oxana Yablonskaya (Russia), Ya-Fei Chuang (Taiwan/USA), Dominique Merlet  (France), Marianna Shirinyan (Armenia) and , Jens Harald Bratlie (Norway) and Einar Steen-Nøkleberg (Chairman).

– We hope that all of the participants will experience an unforgettable week in Bergen, says the director of the Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen and of the piano competition, Sigurd Sandmo.

Free admittance for the general public
The competition will offer an interesting and wide-ranging programme for the participants as well as for the audience. In addition to the competition, there will be a concert lecture by previous Grieg Prize winner Live Glaser, a master class with jury member Dominique Merlet, an outing to Lysøen featuring Norwegian folk music and a solo concert by jury member Ya-Fei Chuang in the unique medieval Håkon’s hall, one of Norway’s most picturesque concert venues.

All of the initial rounds of the competition and the supplementary events at Troldhaugen are free of charge. An exclusive “package deal” is also available for the dedicated listener.
