The 17th Int. Edvard Grieg Piano Competition postponed to 2022

After following the covid-19 situation during the last months, we have now decided to postpone the 17th International Edvard Grieg Piano Competition for one more year, until 26 August to 3 September 2022. The application deadline is postponed to 20 April 2022.

This has not been an easy decision. But the covid-19 situation is still serious in Norway, as in the rest of the world. We do not know when a sufficient amount of the population will be vaccinated, or when restrictions will be omitted. There is also much unpredictability connected with mutated viruses.

Our competition is based on the hospitality of our local voluntary host-families and drivers, and we need them to feel safe with the situation. We do not want to present an online competition, as the physical appearance at Grieg’s Troldhaugen, and all the social meetings in Bergen, are considerable parts of our competition. We also do not want to risk that participants or jurors are not allowed to travel to Bergen, or that the finalists are not allowed to perform with a full orchestra.

Taking this whole situation into consideration we see no other option than postponing the competition, to be able to offer all competitors the unique opportunity to meet in beautiful Bergen in 2022!

Pianists born between 1987-2005 will be able to apply, and the repertoire will be the same. Recordings may not be older than 20 April 2019. In this way, we will not exclude applicants who were eligible for the postponed 2020/2021 competitions, and if you have already made your recording, this can still be used.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you all to the 17th Grieg Competition in 2022!

Best wishes from all of us at the International Edvard Grieg Piano Competition.

Sincerely,
Christian Grøvlen
Director of The International Edvard Grieg Piano Competition
