Welcome to Grieg Competition 2016

The Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen has the great pleasure of inviting pianists from all over the world, who are born between 1983 and 1999, to participate in the 15th International Edvard Grieg Piano Competition, in Bergen, Norway, 2-10 September 2016. Our sincere hope is to offer all competitors not only a world-class event but also the unique opportunity to gain an understanding of the world of Grieg and his music.

The first three rounds of the competition will be held at Troldhaugen, Grieg’s picturesque and well-preserved home set on a hill overlooking Lake Nordås. The final round for three finalists will be held in the Grieg Hall with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra – one of the world’s oldest orchestras, which Edvard Grieg also used to conduct. The competition programme also includes recitals, lectures, excursions, a master class and more.

The Grieg Competition cooperates with host families to offer free housing to all participants, and with the Grieg Academy and the Jiri Hlinka Piano Academy to offer a generous schedule for practicing during the competition.

Concerts matter to young pianists. The Grieg Competition therefore offers all candidates who do not continue competing after the first and second rounds the opportunity to give a concert at one of five venues in the Bergen area. These events are an important part of the competition, and all pianists who give a concert will be paid.

A modern piano competition must be a hub for encounters between musicians and audiences, between tradition and renewal and between young international performers and established institutions. Our goals are to offer talented pianists an enriching experience with Grieg and Norwegian music, to create memories and networks and help launch careers. We thank the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation for enabling us to host a modern and ambitious piano competition in Edvard Grieg's historic surroundings.

Welcome to Bergen and Troldhaugen in September 2016!
